Trigger Warnings: death of parents, abuse of children and death of children

This was the Goodreads Horror winner of 2019 and it was well deserved.

Luke Ellis is kidnapped from his home and his parents are murdered. He wakes up in a place he's told is the institute. A facility for children with Telekenetic and Telepathic powers. Luke makes it his mission to escape and take down the Institute. With the help of Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and Avery Dixon, Luke works to take down Mrs. Sigsby and the terrible staff she directs. The children endure terrible abuse and daily shots that are supposed to cause them to see dots. When they behave they are given tokens that can be spent in the vending machines on things like cigarettes and liquor. All of the chlidren know they are never leaving the institute but are all terrified of what happens in back-half. A part of the institute no ones talks about but everyone ends up eventually and no one ever comes back.

A good read but not necessarily the horror I would associate with Stephen King. This was more of a YA Thriller/Horror but still extremely enjoyable. It was well written and entertaning. I listened to the audiobook which was fantastically done by Santino Fontana. It is well worth the listen and would be a great book for an advanced teen reader who feels they are ready for adult books.
