Cannie Shapiro is a non nonsense pop culture reporter for the Philadelphia Examiner with a fast paced interesting life. She of course struggles with the things most 28 year old's struggle with, her weight, her mother, her relationships. She finds herself newly single when the man she asked to go on a break with writes an article about his ex-girlfriend C in her new column for Moxie magazine, Good in Bed. Calling her out in his article "Loving a larger woman" leads Cannie to the most amazing year of her life mostly by accident.Cannie is a lovable and likable character surrounded by a cast of characters you find yourself rooting for. Between the woman in her nutrition education class who are trying to loose weight, to her best lawyer friend Samantha, her late in life lesbian mother and her well meaning siblings. Although not exactly diverse and the "scandal" of her mother being gay they still serve as a good background group for Cannie. The romantic interest, although oblivious to Cannie herself for much of the novel, if genuine, sweet and just what she needs after her flop of a relationship with Bruce. Bruce comes across as extremely unlikable and not the type of person Cannie should be pining over. Without adding too many spoilers, Cannie's life takes an unexpected turn mid way through the book and it seamlessly weaves into the story.
This was everything I could have ever wanted. For me I wasn't a twenty something in the late 90's but I loved Sex and the City for that slice of big city life for the time. What it was always lacking however was someone who looked like me as the lead and this delivered all the charm and with with a plus sized lead. I loved every minute of it and jumped quickly into the second novel. Even though it was written in the 90s it doesn't really feel dated, aside from technology references it still rings true for plus sized woman navigating dating and life.
