Horror Recommendations

I like many people probably have this last month binged the Fear Street Trilogy on Netflix and gelt all the nostalgia for middle school. I devoured the Fear Street series after getting one at a thrift shop for a quarter. I would buy as many as I could but when I couldn't find full series go to the library and spin the paperback case to find the one's I was missing. Although some libraries still have a good R.L.Stine collection they will be hard to find as their popularity will begin to rise again because of the trilogy. Here is a list of some of my favorite Horror to read while waiting for your inter-library loan!

Harrow County, Vol. 1: Countless Haints - by Cullen Bunn (Writer), Tyler Crook (Artist, Letterer)

Emmy always knew about the legends of her town and the death of the witch Hester. But just before her 18th birthday she realizes that she is more connected to everything going on then she realizes. Fans of supernatural stories with a hint of paranormal will truly enjoy this. This series is also finished so it's super easy to binge the entire thing.

Something is Killing the Children, Vol. 1 by James Tynion IV, Werther Dell'Edera (Illustrator), Miguel Muerto (Colorist)

Child start to go missing in the tiny town of Archer's Peak which attracts a mysterious woman who says she can end the dissapearences. However she also reveals why they are dissapearing, Monsters are killing them. This is very graphic and at times violent, but a wonderful series that is still continuing.

The Institute by Stephen King

This was the Goodreads Horror winner of 2019 and it was well deserved. Luke Ellis is kidnapped from his home and his parents are murdered. He wakes up in a place he's told is the institute. A facility for children with Telekenetic and Telepathic powers. They are experimented upon and will eventually go to the terrifying back half where none of them know what happens next. Luke makes it his mission to exscape and take down the Institute.

Anya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol

After falling down a well Anya has a new friend. A friend who just happens to be a ghost. But as time goes by Anya doesn't want this new friend as she grows into herself. But this new friend isn't ready to leave just yet. This middle grade comic terrified me, it was a great read and just another Brosgol work that I really enjoyed.

Coyotes, Vol. 1 by Sean Lewis, Caitlin Yarsky (Illustrator)

Woman are going missing from the City of Lost Girls a town bordering a desert. Red is a girl who is ready to put it to an end. By killing what's causing the dissapearences, werewolves. After discovering that the werewolves are actually members of the village, Red works with the local police officer to protect their friends and loved ones. This series is finished as well, and although it ended a little too soon for me it was a great read.

Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill

Rock Star Judas Coyne has always collected macabre items. So when his assistant tells him of a ghost in a heart shape box he has to buy it. But he gets way more than he bargained for when he finds out the box is actually haunted. But this ghost is out for revenge against Coyne because of the way he treated his daughter. Coyne and his girlfriend Georgia try to outwit the spirit before he exacts his revenge. A perfect halloween read with twits and turns you don't expect.
