Hill House Comics Reviews

 Basketful of Heads

Joe Hill

5 Stars

Just what I expected from Joe Hill. A perfect story, the small inconsistencies with the art didn't even bother me.

June has gone to visit her boyfriend who has spent the summer as a cop in a small beach town. But when a group of criminals escape her boyfriend Liam is taken by them. With the help of a Viking ax June goes out to find her boyfriend before it's too late. With her Basketful of heads she finds out that Brody Island has a few secrets too many secrets. Including a dead girl, missing money and drug trafficking.

Trigger Warning [Implied Sexual Assault and Rape]

I wish the art was a little more polished, I hate when characters look slightly different or something could have been a little detailed and seemed rushed. But the story was extremely interesting and kept my interest the entire time.

Two girls wake up in a movie theatre not remember any of the movie. They live in a small town that sits on top of a coal mine that has been burning for years. And ever since that mine has been burning weird things happen in town. Woman forget things, pieces of time they lost seemingly for no reason. But what the reason is, whether it be supernatural or natural is unknown. The girls set out to find out what really happened to them. And what they discover isn't what they were expecting.

I mean I liked it, but I wasn't terribly impressed. Considering this is the third Hill House Comic I read this is definitely the worst one. I mean it wasn't terrible, but the storylines jumped around a bit too much for it to feel consistent. It wasn't necessarily hard to follow, but it just didn't work for me.

The storyline although a bit jumbled had an interesting premise which is why I gave it 3 Stars. I did enjoy it but it could have been better. The art could have been far more polished which would have made the story more captivating. Some of the "fluff" storylines could have been shortened and more focus could have fallen on Alice.

A salvage crew is sent to try and salvage a ship that has been lost at sea for 40 years. It has started sending out a weak signal and an oil company has decided they want to recover it. Along with a salvage crew (who sells dildos for some reason?) a representative from the oil crew goes after the ship with a biologist and her friend in tow. When they reach the island they find a dead body, perhaps a body from the wreck or even a castaway. But in reality they discover an alien species intent on trying to put a monster onto the earth.

It was definitely interesting. The concept was strange but it left far too many unanswered questions. What was wrong with the fish in the tank at the beginning, did it have to do with the weird aliens? What was really the purpose of trying to salvage the ship? What was on it that the Russians wanted it too? Why leave a cliff hanger ending? Was it just to increase the amount of horror, because it seems like a sequel was being set up when it really isn't necessary.

I have been given an arc of these title's from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
