Fat Chance, Charlie Vega

Charlie Vega is like any other high school student. She is Puerto Rican and has a few body image issues. But in a world where her best friend Amelia is thin, pretty and seemingly perfect it's difficult for her to accept herself. It seems everyone loves Amelia even the boy Charlie likes and her own mom. But when Charlie meets Brian she finally finds someone who liked her first. Can she finally have a boyfriend and live the life she's always wanted?
A sweet coming of age story I highly related to. Big girls everywhere should read this because it will resonate with that younger feeling of being second best and never accepted. It was well written and I was surprised it was a debut novel. I am definitely looking forward to anything more Maldonado writes. If you are an adult reading this it does get a tad frustrating because some of the things Charlie deals with are very obvious to the reader but not to Charlie herself. I did find myself screaming at Charlie as I listened to it in my car. But it was overall very enjoyable and I highly recommend it.
